In 1935, the Hanyang 88 was set to be replaced as China's standard service rifle by the Type 24 rifle, also known as the 'Chiang Kai-shek' rifle. The Type 24 was based off the shorter and lighter Mauser Standardmodell 1933. The Type 24 became the most widely-used rifle by Chinese forces in the Second Sino-Japanese War.
